Nerenz followed his Berlin teacher Wilhelm Schadow to Düsseldorf, but then returned to his hometown, where he was celebrated as a genre painter. In terms of painting technique and composition, at the same high level that distinguishes almost all early Schadow students, Nerenz's work attracted attention with particular care in detail, combined with an extraordinary mastery of the material. |
|
This painting was created under the impression of the artist's trip to Italy. Nerenz stayed in Rome from 1843-46 and probably again from 1847.
